Why Are Mobile Phones Not Allowed At The Petrol Pumps

Many people take it for granted that mobile phone does not cause any hazard at the petrol pump. Let us get across the fact and the myths regaring the issue of petrol pumps and mobile phones.

The fact about mobiles and petrol: The fact is that petrol is highly inflammable (especially unleaded petrol). There are a few videos on youtube that actually demonstrate how petrol can catch fire in the presence of your mobile. Let us take a look at a few possibilities:

The more you use your mobile the greater is the chance for the petrol to catch fire. The radio signals reaching a mobile phone are generally very high frequency waves. These waves have sufficient energy to set the mobile on fire. Certain companies design high frequency signals purposefully so that the waves can cover a greater span thus ensuring full signal to its customers. In such cases the best way to play safe is to switch your mobile off in a petrol pump.

There are chances for your mobile battery to blast, hence, it is always safe to change battery once its performance drops below the normal battery life.

But, where do I come in contact with the petrol: The petrol on the pipe is more than enough to initiate the flame. The rest depends on your luck.

It is mandatory not to receive calls when you are in a petrol pump. You will not lose job or money in a minute or two. And please do not be lethargic enough to switch your mobile phone off. Your life is much more precious than you think.

There are many proofs which will show you how petrol catches fire in the presence of a ringing mobile phone. Also, even if you call someone from your phone the petrol can catch fire. The only reason why they purposefully tell us to switch the phone off is because, if you forget to activate the lock on the number pad, the mobile may dial something without you being aware of it (now, isn't that dangerous?).

Please leave comments and spread the above message to everybody. You may also list a few things you know regarding the hazard of mobile phones and the safety precautions to be observed in the petrol pump so as to keep us safe from the mobile-petrol hazard.

    1. Depends on your phone, the atmosphere, the type of network you are using with it and the temperature of the place. One mistake and 10 people dead. Talk to someone on the phone for 20 minutes and the mobile gets heated up. It is like an electric pan so keep your intelligence at rest and accept the reality!

  4. ok i'm a safety coodinator in a petroleum industry. Let me put this simply for everyone to understand . First know that to cause fire, we need 3 things. air, heat and combustible item. we cannot block the air, but separate heat and a combustible item . in our this case, the fuel would be petrol and the combustible would be the phone here since the batts in the phone could explode and give out heat/spark etc. So that's the reason why it's not safe to use a phone at a petrol station.

    1. No it is not the exploding batteries which are of concern. To make a battery explode you will have to put your phone to the test by turning on as many applications as possible. Speak with someone over the phone continuously for half an hour, the phone temperature increases! Even more simple: play a video live over the internet and you will understand why we should switch off the mobile phone at the petrol stations.
