Modern Students And Their Minds

In Modern times, the education trends have changed a lot. There was a time when getting a degree was more than enough to get a good job. There were times when students were not even asked for a photo proof in their hall tickets, but now the trends of education have changed and so have the students. Everything is based on competition. Parents demand good scores from their children. But, it is disheartening to say that the students, though, score well in their curricular subjects are far away from understanding them. With the introduction of the notes system students have stopped studying text books. The whole world has become “score” and “competition” oriented. All that the students are bothered about in these modern times is the marks and the grades.

Understanding a subject is important no doubt. But, the students have their own reasons for memorizing text without bothering to know the matter which is dealt with in the text book. I was shocked to see engineering students crossing the red mark by memorizing a subject like mathematics! The not only passed the subject but also scored a good 70+ in it! Though these students somehow manage to clear their degree with an A+ grade marks card, they often fail as successful technical engineers. After the havoc created by the recession times, students are now looking forth to get placed in a permanent government job. And as the trend says: getting a good Government job requires you to get a good marks card with overflowing marks which reach the limit of the skies.

Recent surveys state that most of the students who are brought up in villages prefer getting placed in a Government job. While the ones who are brought up in towns and villages prefer going for private jobs even if it poses the risk of being thrown out by the company during the harsh recession times. Surveys have also stated that students scoring very high marks have a temporary memory which stores things quickly for a short period of time and deletes the matter even more quickly once the exam is over. Average students were found to have a greater depth in the subjects and were also found to have a strong and permanent memory which made them remember things for a long period of time! But, how is this possible?

The answer is quite simple. Most of the average level students section is made up of candidates who read the text, understand the matter and write the answers in the examination papers in their own words. Whereas the ones who score higher, memorize the text books and aim at putting other students behind them in the examination. And hence, most of the students who score a higher percentage are many times unaware of the actual matter which they had memorized from the text books during the examinations. And thus, after this clarification, it is quite obvious to see the average student being placed in very good companies and giving a tough competition to everyone in his professional field.

That being said, the students who have their heads immersed inside the text books are afraid of examinations and hence they revise the same text again and again to make sure that they do not forget anything. Though such students do score high they do not have any innate knowledge of the external world whatsoever. Such students know the world through the books and hence are found lacking good jobs even if their marks cards show the interviewers a brighter curricular performance. Usually these students are found to go for higher studies after unsuccessfully searching for a good job. Reason being they find themselves completely useless as they know not a pinch about whatever is going on around them in this beautiful world which seems to be stranger than a stranger to them. Although, a Government job is always easily available to these students on the basis of their outstanding marks scored.

Quite surprisingly students who read newspapers and are well versed in English quite often stammer when they are asked to perform or give a presentation on a bigger platform facing a huge audience. On the other hand guys who actively participate in sports and other extra-curricular activities show a good performance on a big platform where they get the opportunity to address and present their skills to a wider audience.

Coming to the last category: the students who show a below average performance. Please do remember: “a student has failed many times in his college days or school days” does not mean that the student is weak in studies. This is a major misconception and has to be clarified. The students who score poor marks are of many types. Either they are not interested in the subjects they have chosen, or they might have wanted to join some other course but were forced by their family members to pursue their studies in the course that they are undertaking. In some cases a student does not study just because he is so sharp that the knowledge in the text books seems obsolete and dry to him. A student may be bright but will be having poor concentration due to the habitat he is living in or may be due to his poor nutrition value supported eating lifestyle. Some students are just ignorant and do not take studies seriously at all. One among many factors may make a student to perform poorly. Students who became good mathematicians in their future had failed in math many a times in their lives! This itself tells us that a student whose performance is poor is either too sharp or either too dull. Believe it or not, but, it is this category of students who actually set up industries and companies. One successful project is more than enough to stir the lifestyle of these students. So be careful while deciding a student on the basis of his marks cards. Often these students have a very high grasping power and are found to finish a very complicated subject within a single night and are also found to pass the subject. Such students do not go for higher studies. They will step in for very small jobs at the beginning and then steer their way clear into the bigger companies to get hefty payouts provided they dream of getting a job.

11th hour preparation

Every youngster has gone for an 11th hour preparation in his/ her life. Do you know that a well planned 11th hour preparation can actually get you decent marks in your subjects? Follow the following guidelines and you will definitely get to know how to do this:

1. Always stay prepared for a night out. This will help you score well. There is one very simple strategy using which you can do very quick and easy night-outs and it is really very simple: A cup of tea mixed with ginger extract. Whenever you feel sleepy just take a sip of the tea and you will become as fresh and active as a racing leopard.

2. Rather than reading everything slowly all night long read quickly and highlight the important points in the text. If time permits it is best to write these points down in a separate sheet of paper. This will make it easy for you to have a quick re-revision at the very last hour.

3. Take a quick nap in case you feel very tired. Read a large amount of data in a very short time and mark the most important points in your document.

4. Finally after reading the whole book if possible separately write the highlighted points in another sheet of paper.

7. All the figures should be written in the separate sheet of notes.

8. Try to store the image in a pictographic format in your brain. Always study the figures technically. Once you understand the technology or the sequence of the lines inside the figure there is absolutely no chance of getting confused in the examination.

If you are a student you must have a study table. But any table does not make for a good study table. There has to be a certain chair-and-table combination for a good study table which shall keep you comfortable enough to study for at least five hours.

Usually a study table has to match you height perfectly. But, it is not the table which should be adjusted. It is the chair which has to be adjusted. A proper chair can make you feel really very comfortable while studying. In fact you feel so comfortable that you do not get stressed out so easily and hence you manage to study for a very long time. A good study table should have easily gliding doors and drawers which can hold your books in one place. The doors should also have a lock installed. In mere future you will be using this same table for keeping your private business documents. The study table should always face the direction from where the sunrays enter the room. This has a huge significance in the performance of a student in his curriculum. An open window or a door nearest to the north-east corner is always best as it helps the positive energies to flow inside the room (never block the north and east direction completely with walls). At least one opening in the north or east direction is good for the students to study. The study table can be preferably kept on the opposite side of the window where sufficient light illuminates the room.

Always have a table lamp along with a study table. In case it is late in the night and you need to do some work without disturbing the others with a very bright light you can use the table lamp. Also it is advised by the doctors to use a Direct source of light while studying. Thus a study lamp with as incandescent lamp will do the trick for you. Never study too much under a diffused light source. It might be pleasing to have such a light in the study room, but, it is not meant for studying purposes.

Always buy an adjustable chair with wheels fixed at the bottom. This will make you comfortable as you will be able to adjust the height of the wheel chair as per your convenience. In fact a proper chair is the sweet spot of a perfect study table. Make sure that the chair is extremely comfortable for it is the key thing which will help you study for a very long time.

If you are interested you may have a money plant in your room. It does not require much water and also adds the touch of nature to the study room. A tissue paper is not much mandatory, but having one makes you feel comfortable and you can instantly clean the study table if something falls on it. It is mandatory to keep a separate cloth for cleaning your study table. Cleaning the study table before starting your work is a sign of good discipline.

Cover your study table with a fine leather cloth or a sheet of glass. Covering a study table with a cloth is not appreciable as you will not be able to clean it if a bottle of ink becomes nasty enough to spread its ink on the whole table surface. If you can afford, have a separate table for keeping your personal computer. A computer table should be comfortable for working with computers while a study table should be comfortable enough for long hours studying.

The surface of the study table should be at least two to three inches below your eye position (you may adjust this according to your convenience). You eyes should feel very comfortable while you are studying on your study table.

How To Study?

    Many of us are always stuck in the thought of “how to study?”. The reason is, because, whatever we do, we do not see a hike in our annual statistics. Read on to know the best ways of studying which can make your percentage shoot off through the roof of your college (or school) and make your principal wonder as to what makes this student so indigenously genuine!

    The reason why many a students do not get a lively marks card which shows their real face to the world is because they do not follow procedure. I have seen the sharpest of all students failing in their exams and I have also seen the dumbest of all students topping the class with excellent marks. Did you know that there are many students in the crowd who go to the extent of even “memorizing math”? You might not believe this but I have seen the greatest of all dummies getting decent marks in Engineering Mathematics by memorizing the subject!!!!!!

    Why is it that the greatest of all mathematicians failed in Mathematics during their school/college days? The reason is: they did not follow procedure. What procedure? I will get to that later while telling about math related subjects. First let us take a look at the different types of subjects that we generally deal with: ‘theory subjects’ and ‘problematic subjects’. The way of dealing with either of the categories is different. You cannot study both of them by following the same procedure. Remember? This is the reason why students who are good at math are worse at theory subjects and vice-versa. Now, let us take a deeper dive into the topic at hand.

    First let me tell you how to deal with the theory subjects. Why is it that the students who are good at math fail to perform well in their theory subjects? The reason is because the content is long. And students who are math oriented cannot concentrate on reading large topics for long hours. Students who are good at theory subjects are the ones who are good readers. That is, they are the ones whose heads are always found to be dug deep into the world of novels. They just like reading things continuously without the headache of taking a pen and paper and writing down the most important points in order to memorize them. They read the topic once, understand it, and write things in their own way. They love subjects like Social Science and science which involves a lot of reading. But what about the math lovers, how shall they tackle with this problem? Well the theory lovers also need this piece of information, for, though they are good at the theory subjects, their scores are not so exciting. Why? Because they do not follow procedure. The procedure is as given below:

• Your mind does not understand things which are twisted or mixed up with a huge number of unwanted words.

• The mind always likes clean and easy to remember things.

• That is, you need to squash the subject at hand into a set of very few pages.

• While reading the subject, do not bother about remembering what you have read, just compress the information into a few set of pages which are very clean and easy for the mind to remember.

• Read the whole paragraph ‘as it is in the text’ and summarize it using a few keywords which you find easy to remember.

• Do this, till all that you have to study has been put in the form of a paragraph made up of a few keywords which are helpful in remembering the topic.

    If done properly even the greatest of all engineering subjects can be squashed to a mere of three to four pages of extreme important text. Remembering three to four pages of weighty text is never a hard work. Even the greatest of all beef headed guys on this earth can win things under these circumstances. After this step the next thing is to revise the compressed document at least two times. This shall make you confident enough to face your examinations bravely without the fear of losing your chance in the battlefield.

    Now let us come to the thing which troubles many a kids around the whole world. Even I was a guy who was very much afraid of math. But the day when I came up with this solution I realized how wrong I was in thinking that math is difficult. Mathematics is the simplest of all subjects on this earth. The reason why the toppers score so well in it is because they know the trick which works with this subject. Many students say that you need to work math everyday in order to improve it. But in reality math is a subject which can be learnt within a single night. All you need to do is the following:

• Prepare the key document at the beginning of the year.

• Even if all the derivations are given in the text. Write them separately in your key document.

• While writing derivations ignore the text given in the document and skip this part in your document. At times when it is very crucial to use text use a few words which describe the actions taken in that particular step.

• Doing this shall now reduce your derivation in the document to a few lines of key equations.

• No matter what happens never forget to maintain your list of formulae. This is something which helps you all the time in your examinations.

• Note down the different types of problems that can be asked from each chapter in a piece of rough paper.

• Now write down a brief procedure for solving a particular type of problem in a step-by-step manner.

• Note down such procedure for all types of problem and remember them.

How to increase concentration?

Many a people fail in their official or curricular performance due to lack in concentration. A research on the above topic led me to the following conclusions.

It is absolutely and completely possible to increase your concentration. The state of concentration is the state where you can focus on the topic on hand without getting entangled in the whirlpool of thoughts created in the mind. This topic is really very huge but I have squashed all the information and made it as simple as possible in order to save your time.

First of all there is nothing called as poor concentration. It is either concentration or no-concentration. The reason is because you cannot expect your mind to swallow half an article and reproduce the whole text. If you want to reproduce everything that you have read, you have to make sure that you are studying when you are reading.

Let us take a look into the psychology aspect for a few seconds to analyze the present problem. According to psychology, there are three phases that your mind has to pass through, in order to ensure that you are thorough with the information that you have read. The first phase is that of concentrated reading. Here you need to read the text without letting thoughts to wander around your mind. Next you need to ensure that you have collected the facts properly so that you can easily recollect them whenever required. This is usually done by maintaining an order of remembrance in which all the points can be easily recollected. Next is recalling whatever you have learnt. When you go through all these phases correctly, the information that you have read stays intact in your mind for months together.

Now let us get to the exercise needed in order to increase your concentration. Almost all the experts will advice you the same topic. It’s just their payments that are different depending upon their reputation. The first step is to ensure that you are focused. To many a people it seems rather difficult to stay focused. The reason is quite simple. You create so many thoughts for yourself that you cannot steer your mind away from them. The solution is quite simple. Stay focused for shorter periods and then you will observe that your performance is increasing. Try the following exercise:

Forget everything and concentrate on your work continuously for a minute. Keep a counting timer in your mobile that will alert you after a minute. In this one minute try to avoid all the thoughts and just concentrate on the work at hand. Do not even bother about your performance. Just study continuously without getting disturbed. Always make it a point that you tell your family members that you are reading and would not like getting disturbed for the next few hours. Do not even bother to look around if somebody calls you. Try to read in such focused and concentrated manner for at least three hours a day. Never let anyone disturb your penance. A penance once disturbed has to start all the way from the very beginning itself. So its better not to get disturbed while you are studying. After you finish your studying you can find yourself an excuse by telling them that you were studying and could not hear them as the door of your study room was closed. Don’t bother if you will be able to recollect it later or not. For now there is just one mission in front of you- that of concentrated reading. No lover, no mother and no worry shall be allowed to disturb you. After you achieve perfection in this step carry out the following:

1. Increase the time of the timer and reach the state where you will be able to concentrate for a whole hour on your work without getting much disturbed.

2. Remember nobody is a good reader since birth. They are good at it only because they have achieved perfection in it.

3. Your friend is not much intelligent than you. It is just that he is a bit more focused as compared to you. It also means that his parents have made him imbibe that quality ever since his primary days.

4. Most important thing; always take a gap between two sessions of concentrated work. So you begin with reading a minute and taking a short nap/rest the other minute.

Now the concentration problem is over. The next thing is to make notes. Remember, writing a note does not mean copying a paragraph as it is from the text book. A note is maintained so that it can make it easier for you to remember things. It should be point-wise and should have at the most seven words per point in order to remind you the sentences and the order in which they are to be remembered. These notes shall help you a lot at the eleventh hour.

The next thing is to recall all the points without any source kept in front of you. For theory subjects if you write the starting three sentences properly you can continue the later part with your own language. Just make sure that you give the examiner a hint that you have opened the text-book and swallowed all the material in it. The best way to show this is by writing the first three sentences as it is in the text-book.

If you still find it very difficult to focus on your goal I would suggest you to go for meditation. So far the best meditation technique has been brought out by an organization called as Sahaj Yoga. The campus season is slowly showing its blooming face. Though the conditions aren’t so favorable yet, it seems as if “Mr. Recession” is slowly waving a sayonara to all the troubled engineers.

To all the engineers out there in the crowd, there is a very good news coming their way. The faces of the passing-out engineers and passed-out engineers are slowly glowing again by knowing the fact that the recession period is now slowly fading away with time. There are many positive hopes coming our way in the upcoming months. The devil of recession which had rendered so many people jobless is now departing from our nation. Let the blessings of Lord be always bestowed upon us.

Now, as the sun of recession is setting, how about reading a good article about the various things that can help us get good jobs. First of all know what you want. Open the doors of your heart and ask your heart what it wants to become. There are many people out there in the crowd who were very much interested in animation and car designing but ended up as software engineers because of the ease with which the jobs were available and also because of the temptation which was created in their minds due to the huge packages they were offered with. Result- they were thrown out of the company during the recession period as they did not show the necessary dedication which was expected by the company managers. Whereas those who did not bother about the money part and just stuck to the fields they liked the most were never chucked out because of the dedication they showed towards their jobs. That is why it is very necessary to know what you want to become in your life.

Second thing- Be very careful with your resumes. The simpler it is, the greater are the chances for you to get selected. If a company demands very high percentage (it is quite evident that they will ask for people with high percentage because they want hard working quality engineers) try to go for it. Try to avoid small software companies. They will definitely throw the freshers away during difficult times. Try to join big companies in the software field. In other fields, recession does not hit so hard. So if you are looking out for a software job try to join big companies which are widely recognized at the international level. Wipro provides much job security as compared to Infosys. So decide well as to which company suits you the best. Take a close look at the performance of the company and the policies laid out by them for the benefit of their workers. Do not wear very complex or sluggish dresses while going to interviews. Do not worry too much about the mistakes you make during the interview. A mistake can be rectified by concentrating on the present situation. Never be too conditioned on getting a job. Have a free mind. There are lots of companies out there giving tons of opportunities to interested people. Never be too afraid about the idea of being thrown out during the interview. Play your part and free your mind. Leave the rest up to them and you will be surprised to find out that your confidence levels will boost up when you walk in with such an attitude. Never feel too frustrated. And always remember that the interviewer is watching you. Each and every thing you do will be noticed by the interviewer. So do not fiddle around or chat with someone on your mobile phone.

The reason why so many students are afraid during the interview is because they imagine instances where they cannot answer the interviewer. So it is better to think that you have all the necessary things that are required to pass the interview. If this also does not work out just try to think that all the people around you are lame people and do not know much about the subject as compared to you. This will bring down the beats of your heart. Be very confident during the interviews. The basic requirement of any company is good English. So tweak your English speaking skills and try speaking with an eloquent style. Doesn’t matter if you use simple words but use it with much efficiency. Also try to use a few phrases which can make your speech a bit different. Do not forget to use question tags. These leave a very good impression on the mind of the person who is interviewing you. Also do not forget to stay in touch with the current events. The interviewers will be interested in knowing if you have good reading skills and will hence ask you about the paper you like reading the most. In terms of quality I find Deccan Herald to be the king of all the papers in Karnataka. Indian Express is also a good one but it loses it out to the likes of TOI and Deccan Herald in Karnataka. Whereas if you are in Maharashtra you will find that the quality of Indian Express is just awesome. So never forget to take a look at all the different papers that are around you and decide on which one is the best. If you are not so good at English consider asking about it to an English expert friend or any English teacher of yours. Generally throughout India TOI and Indian Express have a good feedback. Remember, your best paper has to be the one which you know very well. You will be asked question like “why do you like _____ paper so much?” Do not try to show off by saying that you like it because it has a very good quality. Instead focus on the things that you like the most in your paper. For e.g. Indian express comes with very good supplements during Fridays and Sundays. This makes up for a very impressive answer. Also make it a point that the paper you read suits your interests. Like say TOI gives a very good summary of the Sports events. So you make it a point by saying that as TOI gives a very good summary of the matches in the Sports section you prefer reading it rather than the other papers. Also remember the sequence of the categories as in your favorite paper. E.g.:

2. National news

3. Districts

4. Business

5. Sports

6. Metro

7. Special features…….

One thing to remember during the interviews is that the smartness of your brain is of much importance. If you think that tidying up yourself is going to help you a lot then let me tell you that you are mistaken. No wonder the first impression is made by your overall looks, but later it is the smartness of your brain which is going to save you. Always try to enter such interviews where your score is a bit more than the cut-off which is set by the company. So that if you end up having a tie with some other person your marks will help you get the job.

Wear dresses of good quality during an interview. I agree that by the end of the day your dresses will lose all their shapes and the stiff iron which was applied to it, but a good dress gives you much dignity and you will feel more involved in the game. Also remember that in interviews it is getting selected which is more important and not pulling others down. If you constantly grab chances and do not allow others to speak you will be definitely chucked out. So do not attack everybody like a mad bull having large horns. Always speak when you get the chance to speak. Always speak differently. Let your way of approach separate you from others. Have face to face contact with everybody in the campus hall (leaving aside the tea and snacks suppliers).

In the list of your favorite subjects in the resume write only those subjects that you know from top to bottom. Anything asked and you should be able to answer them as in a rapid fire round of the quiz contests. Never leave any stone unturned. Take each and every chance to show your talents. Until and unless you open your mouth the interviewer will never know your strengths. Never show your weaknesses during the interview. Never shake or tremble much while answering the questions asked to you. If you are shaking too much just take a long breath and hold your breath this shall reduce the beats of your heart and bring your excitation under control. If the beats are way too large breathe out and hold the breath till your excitement reduces.

As for the clothes part, it is better to wear white shirt and black (or dark) trousers. Girls are well off with sarees. Do not show off under any circumstances. It is a very bad habit. Nobody likes people who show off too much. Wear a tie and a good blazer if possible. It is makes up for a very good dress code. Always have a smile on your face.
